why Downsizing matters

Downsizing is an important part of both the healing process and our commitment to health and safety

What’s downsizing?

When you get a new piercing, a longer post or bar is used at first to allow for swelling. After the swelling goes down, Downsizing involves replacing the longer bar with a shorter, fitted one.

This helps prevent the piercing from tilting, forming bumps, or getting snagged, which can lead to healing issues or movement of surface piercings. Downsizing supports better healing, increased comfort, and a more attractive appearance.

Downsizing guides for different piercings

  • Ear lobes: we usually like to assess lobe piercings for downsizing around 8-12 weeks. It's good to shorten these for comfort, minimising risk of trauma and irritation from movement of the initial long bar.

In regards to first time ear lobe piercing - if your intent is to be changing the initial jewellery to others after 12 or so weeks; there is then no need to come back for downsizing.

That being said it is critical to stick to implant grade earrings (e.g verified implant grade titanium or 14kt solid gold and higher) for the entirety of the healing process.

If ever unsure about your downsize protocol reach out to your piercer for advice.

  • These locations are critical to downsize in a timely manner as they are at the highest risk of the posts tilting from pressure when sleeping or catching on our clothes/hair etc. When this happens the piercing may never heal and you can be left with permanent bumps around the piercing site due to the piercing sitting at an incorrect angle.

We always reschedule clients with any of these piercings to ensure we are assessing the piercings at the correct time frame
