An important part of healing
Downsizing is a key step in the healing process for many piercings. Once initial swelling reduces, replacing longer jewellery with a correctly fitted post helps your piercing heal comfortably and correctly.
What is Downsizing?
When a piercing is first performed, longer jewellery is often used to allow room for swelling. As swelling decreases, this extra length can begin to cause irritation if left in place.
Downsizing involves replacing the initial jewellery with a shorter, properly fitted piece. This helps stabilise the piercing, reduce movement, and support healthy healing.
Ear Lobes: Often downsized during early healing
Cartilage Piercings: Commonly downsized around 6–8 weeks
Oral Piercings: May require earlier downsizing
Body Piercings: Assessed on a case-by-case basis
Your piercer will advise you on the best timing for your specific piercing.
Why skipping downsizing can cause issues
Leaving jewellery in a new piercing that is too long can lead to angling, prolonged swelling, irritation bumps or discomfort. In some cases, it can impact the final appearance of the piercing.
Downsizing is a simple step that can make a significant difference to long-term results.
